2009 West Coast Championship

COMMENTS

First, thank you to those JCSA members that worked so hard to get the range ready and that helped run the match, Charlie Dean, Don & Fay Ritz, Paul Hoadley, Tom Williams, Dan Masten, and Tom Hull. John Fouts was the technical brain behind the match managing the pre-registration, stat house, and maintenance, updating of scores, and calculating the shoot-off’s and final results. The match would not have happened without each one of you and your contributions.

I heard that Dave and Patsy Silva and Robert and Joyce Brown hosted a Tuesday night Southeastern Pulled Pork Barbeque for the competitors. Patty, Sue, and Fay along with Patsy were in charge of the salads & sides.

A very special thank you goes to Bret Stuntebeck and Steve Parsons for being the chief instigators of another excellent Fish Fry on Wednesday night. It was a “Surf and Turf” banquet this year with halibut, salmon, black snapper, venison and elk. Bret’s 15 gallons of homebrew also helped to wash everything down! Thanks to all that brought side dishes and to Dave Pitt for the awesome Jalapeno pepper poppers. Bret and Steve told me that it was the largest crowd ever with between 40 and 50 people in attendance.

While I was working on match stuff Thursday night, I understand that Val and Vickie Shaver also hosted a super Taco Night.

Friday night was our customary banquet by the pond catered by the Owen family’s Silver Ridge Outfitters. The cowboy Dutch oven biscuits, baked beans with pineapple, potatoes, and two cobblers and strawberry/rhubarb pie for dessert rounded off a wonderful tri-tip/chicken barbecue. If you went home hungry it was your fault! It was another outstanding time of socializing. We were fortunate to have Silver Ridge provide lunches as well. The good news is that they have committed to provide food service for us again in 2010!

Obviously, the West Coast is the choice of gourmet cooks and hungry shooters! Now I know why Dave Whitman stayed at the range so late most nights!

And a special thanks goes to the person that saved the bacon of many shooters by making quick work of repairing handguns that decided to break at inopportune times. Jim Henry, we could not do without you good friend! Although I did miss Fay’s Texas caviar!

Thanks to Rick Davis for donating the beautiful Big Bore tote box and to John Tschannen for being the high bidder at the auction. That added $70 to the target setters’ tip jar.

Sue, Pam, Patsy, Patty, Karen and Fay are part of the LASC Cap Ladies. They religiously knit caps for cancer patients. They worked hard and presented Irene with 15 caps to donate to cancer centers in SW Oregon. She has decided to divide them equally between two oncology and one radiation clinic in the valley. This is another reason why silhouette shooters are a family like no other. We love you guys!

Next, thank you to every competitor that took time out of their lives, made a significant financial commitment, and attended this year’s match. Without your support we would not be able to afford to run the match. You are all family to us, and we look forward to our reunion each year. We had 47 shooters firing 316 entries this year. I am sure we are continuing to be the largest 60 round silhouette match in the US.

Without a doubt, Lon Pennington (CO) was the man to beat again this year, and it rarely happened. Lon smashed several International records. His Field Pistol Production 57 is a new 60 round match record, and his Field Pistol aggregate of 111 broke a record (109) that has stood since the early 1990’s. Of course, those accomplishments earned him both Field Pistol championships as well as the high Field Pistol Aggregate. It should be noted that Lon and Joe Cullison were in a shoot-off for the PAS title with Lon hitting 6x10 targets to Joe’s 5. Standing shoot-off’s are always fun to watch. His winning ways continued onto the Small Bore range with three new world records. Lon broke the three and four gun aggregate record scores he shot in 2008 with scores of 170 and 229 respectively. Also, his Standing score of 51 broke the record score of 50 shot by Hal Simpkins in 2002. These great scores earned him the Revolver and Standing championships as well as the Four Gun Aggregate trophy. While none of Lon’s Big Bore scores broke records, he was our Big Bore Production, Revolver, Standing and Unlimited Standing champion as well as the Four Gun and Standing Aggregate winner. Needless to say, this outstanding display of marksmanship also earned him the coveted Iron Man award for the high Eight Gun Aggregate in Small Bore and Big Bore.

Over on the Air Pistol range, Steve Mooney came out of AAA class to shoot an outstanding Production 59 to take that title. His score is also the highest Production Air Pistol score shot at any West Coast Championship. This also gave Steve a leg into International class. Steve was also our Unlimited Standing champion. Steve also won the Four Gun Aggregate with a 209.

Rick Davis was our Air Pistol Standing and Unlimited Standing Iron Sight match champion and Three Gun Standing Aggregate champion with a 118. Steve Ware was our Unlimited Any Sight match champion.

Ted Zysk was our Big Bore Unlimited champion winning the title in a rather spectacular shoot off with Lon Pennington and Steve Mooney. Ted’s 9x10 shoot-off targets to Lon and Steve 8 and 7 provided a dramatic ending to that tie.

Bret Stuntebeck took the Big Bore Unlimited Any Sight championship with a perfect 60 and 4x5 of the shoot-off targets in the preliminary shoot-off round. Dave Silva and Doug Forsyth took International second and third.

Things were interesting on the One-Fifth Scale range. Dave Silva came out of AAA class to shoot a perfect 60x60 then 4 shoot-off targets to take the Any Sight championship. Robert Brown and Jerry Ray then had to shoot off their 59’s to determine first and second place in International class. Robert took the first place 2 shoot-off targets to Jerry’s 1. Eric King was our Unlimited champion. While Jim Harris took none of the championship titles, he proved that consistency can still be a winner by taking the One-Fifth Scale Aggregate trophy.

Harry Sharp was the master when it came to Half Scale taking both the Unlimited and Unlimited Any Sight titles and the Half Scale Aggregate. He shot an Any Sight 60x60 and 5 shoot-off targets giving Mike Dewey second place International class with a 60 and 3 and a 60 and 3 in Unlimited with Eric King right behind him with a 59. Harry continued his winning ways on the Small Bore range firing the only 60x60 in Production and taking that championship.

Charlie Dean was our Small Bore Unlimited championship taking that title in a shoot off with Dave Silva and Joe Cullison. Charlie’s 6 shoot-off targets was the winner over their 4 and 3 targets respectively. However, Joe took the Unlimited Standing championship with an excellent 51x60.

Val Shaver took the Small Bore Unlimited Any Sight championship with an excellent 60 and 5 shoot-off targets.

There were a lot of personal accomplishments by other shooters this year. Those shooting legs into higher classes were Dano Saarinen (BB-P AA and FP-PAS AA), Rick Davis (BB-UAS AAA), Scott Roberts (BB-US AAA), George Holdaway (BB-US AA and FP-P AAA), Dave Silva (UASFS INT), John Tschannen (FP-P AAA), David Lehman (PF-P AAA), Ron Sprafkin (FP-PAS AA and SB-S AA and SB-US AA), Joe Stumpf (FP-PAS A), Doug Forsyth (UASHS INT), Bret Stuntebeck; Robert Brown; and Steve Bishop (SB-P AAA), Dennis Edwards (SB-R INT), and Dave Pitt and Steve Parsons (SB-S AA)

Ron Sprafkin jumped class into FP-P AA class and Mike Aber jumped class into FP-PAS AA.

Please mark your membership cards with these legs and new classes.

Again, thanks to all that attended. We look forward to seeing everyone at the tenth anniversary West Coast Championship match June 15-19, 2010. Mark your calendars and put in for vacations!

2008 West Coast Championship Match Results

2008 2008 West Coast Championship

JCSA Pistol Silhouette Club

Grants Pass, OR

19 Turkeys, Match Director

6/17-21/2008

Comments

The eighth annual West Coast Championship is in the record books, and what a match it was! 344 entries were fired by shooters from Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado, Indiana, and British Columbia. This was the second largest West Coast since we started in 2001. Jim Henry, the consummate silhouette gunsmith, came from Barstow, and the shooters kept him busy. In fact, Jim saved several shooters’ bacon when their pistol broke just before time to go to the line.

The social highlight of the match was the Owen family, owners of Silver Ridge Outfitters, cooking dinner Friday night by the pond cowboy style in Dutch ovens. Everything was cooked to perfection, tri-tip, chicken, red potatoes with onion, garlic & bacon, biscuits, and peach cobbler and Marionberry crisp for desert had everyone’s tummy filled to capacity.

I am making a match director’s ruling and awarding Eric King the best headgear of the match award.

There were so many personal bests that I know I’ll leave someone out, and I apologize up front for that. But, Lon Pennington was certainly the stellar performer of the match. He won the 8 gun Iron Man Aggregate, was High Senior, and tied with Ted Zysk for the Half Scale Aggregate. Lon was awarded the aggregate trophy by a toss of a coin. He immediately cut the trophy in half and shared it with Ted. Now, that’s a memento both will cherish! Lon also took several championships. See the match report for all of his accomplishments.

Harry Sharp hit 359 targets out of 360 in his first six entries. That has to be close to some kind of a record.

Maggie Fouts was our High Lady with a 60 in Big Bore UAS.

Aggregate winners were Steve Mooney Air Pistol 3 Gun, Joe Cullison Big Bore 4 Gun, Lon Pennington Small Bore 4 Gun and Field Pistol, Paul Alexander Air Pistol 3 Gun Standing, Joe Cullison Big Bore and Small Bore Standing, Lon Pennington & Ted Zysk sharing the Unlimited Half Scale, and Jim Harris One-Fifth Scale..

We had our first ever Air Pistol shoot-off. Rick Davis and Paul Hoadley were tied in Unlimited Any Sight with 58’s. Paul hit one one-twentieth scale chicken to Rick’s zero taking the title.

I always like to see AAA shooters rise to the occasion and beat the International shooters, and it happened this year. Congratulations to Rick Davis (AAA) for winning the Air Pistol Unlimited championship, and Joe Cullison (AAA) for winning the Small Bore Unlimited Standing championship.

Scott (Scooter the Shooter) Mann made it this year and was well rewarded. He was our Big Bore Production, Revolver, and Unlimited, Unlimited One-Fifth Scale, and Small Bore Unlimited champion. Scott is undoubtedly one of the finer pistol shooters in the sport, and I hope he returns in 2009.

Thanks to everyone that helped prep the range, Don & Fay, George, Charlie, Tom, Paul, Doug, Jim, and Scott and anyone else I may have missed. Thanks to John for doing the pre-registration & doing all the stat work. Your software is invaluable.

A very special thank you goes to Bret Stuntebeck & Steve Parsons. They did a wonderful fish fry for the second year in a row with Bret’s special homebrew. This year’s choice was Alaskan Amber. We dined on halibut, lingcod, salmon, and sea bass, and everyone brought a side dish or two. Bret & Steve promised to do it again on Thursday night next year subject to availability of fish. Let’s hope the fish are biting again.

Next year’s match will be June 16-20. Mark your calendars and plan to attend. We look forward to seeing everyone again.
